BerdsCarnival (Maraya G Lopez)
Through the guise of play, my work is an exploration of the in-between spaces of our existence. “What is what it seems is not what it is at all.”
BerdsCarnival is both my name and my project—a deliberate gesture to shift focus away from the singular “I” and toward the work itself. My identity is a site of ongoing negotiation, not fixed by any one gender, nation, or ethnicity. Like most people, I exist in between, moving through and beyond the categories that often confine us. This in-betweenness is not just lived experience; it is the foundation of my practice.
BerdsCarnival (Maraya G Lopez) is a multidisciplinary artist based in New York City. Born in 1979 in Lubbock, Texas, her work spans installation, live interventions, and painting, often centering on community, collaboration, and radical pedagogy.
Her projects have been exhibited at The Painting Center, A.I.R. Gallery’s 2017 Biennial, Flux Factory, Kunst Werke (KW) Gallery, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in collaboration with Occupy Museums. Other notable presentations include The Six Foot Platform in Dumbo (2021), the Long Island Museum of Art (2023), and the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (2024).
In 2015, BerdsCarnival transformed a Coney Island carnival game trailer into a working studio, launching the Magic Machine, a D.I.Y. summer artist residency program. They have collaborated with artist Ryan Compton and the Occupy Museums Collective on What’s Not There, a project exploring institutional critique and invisible labor.
Her works have been exhibited in The Met Museum and participated in the Met Museum Workers Biennial exhibitions. BerdsCarnival is a full-time security guard at The Met and a teaching artist with Art Yard BKLYN, where she continues to develop community-engaged art and education initiatives.
