Coney Island has been an influence in my work since I first discovered it in winter of 2009. Winter is still my favorite time to visit. For me, there is a special link between home (Lubbock) and Coney in the winter. It may not be visually apparent, but it’s almost always a departure into all my projects. I’m attracted to it’s long standing histories of people and events, it’s darkness and lightness, it’s grit, it’s unruly perseverance in the face of natural disasters and rezoning. It is the micro world of this world. Everything you could ever want to find or discuss, is there, buried in the sand. It is up to us to discover it’s magic.
